What are the fire and building codes for energy storage systems?
However, many designers and installers, especially those new to energy storage systems, are unfamiliar with the fire and building codes pertaining to battery installations. Another code-making body is the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA). Some states adopt the NFPA 1 Fire Code rather than the IFC.
Do NFPA 855 and DS 533 require separation?
Both NFPA 855 and DS 5-33 require that modules be provided with separation: Fire Protection A fire detection and fire control and suppression system is generally required by both NFPA 855 and DS 5-33 and automatic sprinkler protection is the preferred method. However, both standards contain provisions for alternative fire protection.
Does NFPA 855 & FMDs 533 apply to ESS facilities?
The International Fire Code is applied as the law of the land in most US jurisdictions but is also the least up-to date. This article highlights some key provisions required by NFPA 855 and FMDS 5-33 only for larger ESS facilities (i.e. not ancillary to other occupancies). Occupancy and Siting
Does NFPA 855 allow fire suppression?
One other caveat of NFPA 855 allows fire suppression to be omitted completely if the ESS underwent large-scale testing in accordance with UL 9540 (see below). DS 5-33 contains no such provision. Full-scale tests have shown that even sprinklers are unable to outright extinguish an ESS fire.
What is the best NFPA data sheet for electrical energy storage systems?
At the same time, FM Global published Property Loss Prevention Data Sheet 5-33, Electrical Energy Storage Systems, which also sets forth protection requirements for ESS, some with significant differences with NFPA 855 and is generally the most up to date.
Are fire suppression systems FM-approved or UL-listed?
Although many fire suppression system manufacturers market their products to the ESS industry and claim their products passed testing, no fire protection systems are currently FM-Approved or UL-listed for this application.
