To our knowledge, no study has been done to assess the availability of emergency medical services (EMS) and acute health facility care in Uganda at a national level.

What is the state of emergency medical services (EMS) in Uganda?

The state of emergency medical services (EMS) in Uganda is limitedly documented. Available evidence comes from studies that focused on assessing EMS capacity and gaps at the national level, particularly in Kampala, or identifying risk factors for specific emergency medical conditions.

Does Uganda need a functional EMS system?

An emergency medical service (EMS) system in Uganda is defined as one that organizes all aspects of care provided to patients in the pre-hospital or out-of-hospital environment [1]. The Ministry of Health needs to speed up efforts to provide policies and guidelines and increase investments for the creation of a functional EMS in Uganda.

How many pillars of EMS are there in Uganda?

The study collected data on six pillars of EMS in Uganda and compared their frequencies and percentages for different levels of the health care system. At the time of this study, Uganda did not have any EMS policy or guidelines, and there was no functional toll-free number for emergency response in the country.

How many pre-hospital providers in Uganda have ambulance services?

Among the 52 pre-hospital providers in Uganda, 16 (30.8%) reported having ambulance services with vehicles. The remaining 36 providers, who were the Uganda Police, had no ambulances but used improvised means of transportation (Police patrol trucks) in emergency situations.
